In the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns" Mariam and Laila did not want Zalmai (daughter of Laila) to see Rasheed (husband of Laila). What are some pros and cons of Zalmai not meeting her biological father Rasheed? Is there irony in the predicament? Explain why or why not.
There is indeed irony in this predicament. Like Nana, Mariam disapproved of her child's biological father. One pro to not meeting Rasheed is not being able to experience his physical and emotional abuse. Rasheed was an abusive husband to Mariam, as many of the Afghan men are to their wives. Women are inferior to the superior men in the Afghan society. Zalmai would have been another subject to abuse if Rasheed had still been around. A con was that there would be no man to protect Mariam and Zalmai. This is ironic because the protector was also the aggressor. This perdicament shows why women are so dependent on men in the Afghan culture.
